What are Nextbots and Backrooms?

Before we dive into the game, let's first explain what are nextbots and backrooms, the two main elements of the game.

Nextbots: NPCs with advanced pathfinding and navigation

Nextbots are a type of NPCs (non-player characters) that use the source nextbot system. Nextbots were first created by Valve for the game Left 4 Dead to allow more advanced pathfinding and navigation. Unlike regular NPCs, nextbots require a navigation mesh (navmesh for short) to move around. A navmesh is a map that defines where nextbots can walk, jump, climb, etc. Nextbots can also have different behaviors, such as chasing, fleeing, attacking, etc.

Backrooms: An online urban legend of endless mazes

Backrooms are an online urban legend that originated from a creepypasta posted on a 2019 4chan thread. The creepypasta described a scenario where someone noclips out of reality (a term used in video games to describe when a player goes through walls or objects) and ends up in the backrooms, a place where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms. The creepypasta also warned that if someone hears something wandering around nearby, they should run, because it sure as hell has heard them.

The original creepypasta sparked a lot of interest and imagination among internet users, who expanded upon the concept by creating different levels and entities that inhabit the backrooms. The backrooms became one of the most well-known examples of the internet aesthetic of liminal spaces, which depicts usually busy locations as unnaturally empty.

How to play Nextbots in Backrooms

Now that we have some background information, let's see how to play Nextbots in Backrooms. The game is a classic first-person indie horror game that puts you in the shoes of someone who has fallen from their reality into the otherworldly world of backrooms. Your only goal is to survive and find your way out.

Choose from eight available levels with different dangers and environments

In the menu, you can choose from eight available levels of backrooms, each with its own theme, layout, difficulty, and entities. The levels are:

  • The Lobby: A big labyrinth of hallways and rooms with yellow wallpaper and brown carpet. This is the original level from the creepyp also has a secret boss that can be encountered if you are unlucky or brave enough.

  • The Office: A level that resembles a modern office building with cubicles, desks, and computers. This level is more complex than the previous ones, as it has multiple floors, elevators, and security systems. The entities here are mostly based on office workers, such as the Clerks, the Managers, and the Executives. The Office also has some puzzles and clues that can help you find the exit.

  • The Warehouse: A level that looks like a large industrial warehouse with crates, shelves, and forklifts. This level is very spacious and open, but also very dangerous, as it has many hidden entities that can ambush you, such as the Rats, the Spiders, and the Snakes. The Warehouse also has some vehicles and weapons that you can use to fight back or escape.

  • The Mall: A level that mimics a shopping mall with stores, food courts, and escalators. This level is very colorful and diverse, but also very chaotic and unpredictable, as it has many random events and anomalies that can affect you, such as power outages, fire alarms, and glitches. The entities here are mostly based on shoppers, such as the Customers, the Thieves, and the Mannequins. The Mall also has some items and money that you can collect and use.

  • The Hospital: A level that resembles a medical facility with beds, equipment, and blood. This level is very creepy and disturbing, as it has many gruesome entities that can harm you, such as the Patients, the Doctors, and the Nurses. The Hospital also has some health kits and drugs that you can use to heal or boost yourself.

  • The Carnival: A level that imitates a funfair with rides, games, and clowns. This level is very fun and scary at the same time, as it has many thrilling entities that can chase you, such as the Clowns, the Balloons, and the Dolls. The Carnival also has some tickets and prizes that you can win and use.

Find a way out while avoiding the entities that inhabit the Backrooms

Once you select a level, you will spawn in a random location in the Backrooms. Your objective is to find a way out of the level by locating an exit door or portal. However, this is easier said than done, as you will have to face many challenges and dangers along the way.

The most obvious threat are the entities that inhabit the Backrooms. These are nextbots that have different appearances, behaviors, and abilities. Some of them are friendly or neutral, but most of them are hostile or deadly. They will try to hunt you down or hinder your progress by using their senses or skills. You will have to avoid them or fight them using your wits or weapons.

Another challenge is the layout of the Backrooms. The Backrooms are randomly generated and constantly changing, so you will never know what to expect or where to go. You will have to explore every corner and every room to find clues or hints that can lead you to the exit. You will also have to deal with obstacles or traps that can block your way or harm you.

A final challenge is your own survival. You will have to manage your health and stamina by finding food and water or resting when needed. You will also have to maintain your sanity by avoiding looking at disturbing sights or sounds or using items that can calm you down. If you lose too much health or sanity, you will die or go insane.

Use the navigation mesh to move around and escape

As mentioned before, nextbots require a navmesh to move around. This means that they can only walk on areas that are marked by the navmesh. You can use this to your advantage by using a special tool called the Navmesh Editor. This tool allows you to see the navmesh in your surroundings and edit it by adding or removing areas.

You can use this tool to create paths or shortcuts for yourself or block paths or dead ends for the nextbots. You can also use this tool to create traps or distractions for the nextbots by placing decoys or noises on the navmesh. However, be careful not to mess up too much with the navmesh, as it can cause glitches or errors in the game.

Why Nextbots in Backrooms is a fun and scary game

Nextbots in Backrooms is a game that will appeal to fans of horror games and internet culture alike. Here are some reasons why Nextbot
